About Mary

Mary L. Ryan has served as the director of the UAMS Library since April of 1997.  Her previous positions include Executive Director of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region, an outreach and training program supported by the National Library of Medicine (NIH); Chief of the Technical Operations Branch of the Food & Drug Administration Library; Assistant Director for Technical Services at the UAMS Library; and Serials Librarian at the Tulane University Medical Center Library.

Ms. Ryan received a Master of Library Science degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and a Master of Public Health degree (with honors) from the UAMS College of Public Health, and was awarded a National Library of Medicine Medical Informatics Fellowship.   She is a member of Beta Phi Mu (international library science honor society) and Delta Omega (honorary public health society).  Ms. Ryan is a recipient of the UAMS College of Public Health’s Student Leadership Award, the Dale Bumpers AHEC Leadership Award, and the South Central Chapter/Medical Library Association’s Distinguished Service Award. She is the 2009 Distinguished Alumna from the LSU School of Library and Information Sciences, served as President of the Medical Library Association and is an MLA fellow, and is currently a member of the NIH National Library of Medicine Board of Regents.

Ms. Ryan has spoken on scholarly communication issues at meetings of numerous organizations, including the Medical Library Association, the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers.
